Behind most great gaming franchises is a single great protagonist. The Charactersof Gaming series was created to spot light these famous figuresand give them the attention that they have earned. These superstarsoften times began life with humble beginnings as speedy hedgehogs, greatapes, or even simple plumbers.

Nintendo struck it rich when theypulled this pipe-worker out of the sewers.

Why he made the cut:
In our world, Mario was just a normal Italian-American who made hisliving as a plumber. After being sucked into the Mushroom Kingdomhowever, the overall-clad adventurer rose to the challenge of becomingthe hero of all the mushroom people as he became embroiled in theendless battle of good vs. evil against the king of all Koopas, Bowser.

Mario originally was given a mustache because it gave himrecognizable facial characteristics that were hard to graphically renderduring the Atari and early NES day when he first appeared. For similarreasons, his overalls provided a contrast between his arms and body anda cap was worn as a shortcut to not have to depict hair. The famousplumber hasn't let fame change him as he still dons his work overallsand has kept the lip trophy to this day to honor his humble origins.

With collecting gold coins and hurling turtle-like koopa shellsamong his favorite pastimes, Mario remains the vigilante protector ofthe Mushroom Kingdom - keeping a watchful eye for Bowser's next strike.
